SB Recruitment Founder: Sarah

A passionate beginning during the GFC

Sarah’s story with SB Recruitment began during the Global Financial Crisis (GFC), a challenging period for both businesses and the job market. As a recruiter during this tumultuous time, Sarah retained her job but witnessed a shift in the industry towards transactional approaches. Fueled by a passion for candidate and client care, she decided to venture out on her own. Despite the adversity, Sarah’s determination and belief in providing quality recruitment services led her to take the bold step of starting SB Recruitment from her kitchen table in Sydney.

Fast forward to now, SB Recruitment predominantly works within the accounting and finance, banking and business support sectors. With a team of nine internal staff and approximately 100 employees on the SB Recruitment payroll, the company is poised to capitalise on emerging opportunities and continue its upward trajectory in the recruitment landscape.

Specialisation and Networking

Sarah emphasises the importance of specialisation and market knowledge in the field of recruitment. At SB Recruitment, they differentiate themselves by focusing on specific sectors. By honing in on these specialities, they can provide tailored services to both candidates and companies. This strategic approach not only streamlines operations, but fosters strong relationships within the industry.

Sarah noted the significance of building and fostering long-term relationships. “Relationships are what matter and what builds your reputation”, she affirmed. Sharing her advice, Sarah recognises the importance of networking, acknowledging its contribution to their success.

Fostering a positive culture:

Sarah highlighted the role of positive leadership in fostering a motivated culture within the company. “A fish rots at the head”, she explains, underscoring the significance of leaders maintaining a positive and motivated attitude. Despite the challenges that may arise, leaders set the tone for their team. She adheres to the principle of never asking her staff to do something she wouldn’t do herself. Whether it’s engaging in recruitment activities or business development efforts, Sarah leads by example, fostering a culture of accountability within her team.

Lessons Learned and Advice

Sarah’s journey is not without its lessons. Embracing risk, she took the leap to start SB Recruitment despite the uncertain economic climate. Reflecting on this decision, she remarks, “When I look back, what was I thinking?... It was a very challenging time, but you get through it and you learn a lot.” Her key lesson is to never give up, acknowledging that challenges are opportunities for growth. She emphasised the importance of reflection, turning negatives into learning opportunities, and using those lessons to set the stage for future success.

As Sarah looks towards the future, she envisions a path of continued growth and innovation for SB Recruitment. With an eye towards sustainability, Sarah plans to expand into the green economy. Through her leadership, Sarah’s journey exemplifies resilience, adaptability and a commitment to client and candidate care. As SB Recruitment continues to navigate challenges and explore new opportunities, its success remains grounded in the principles of specialisation, positive leadership and long-term relationship building. The future looks promising for SB Recruitment.
