What was the vision behind the design of Riva Offices Robina?
The vision behind the design of Riva Offices Robina is to create a high-end, flexible co-working space that caters to the diverse needs of professionals and businesses. What do they need, what do their clients need, and how do we fulfil that need for them. Our aim is to complete a self-discovery of our client's needs, but yet it goes far beyond just this, we need to spend time in the space, we need to be flexible.
Can you walk us through the design process?
The design process for the space began with a comprehensive discovery phase, ensuring that we asked the right questions to gain a deep understanding of our client’s needs and aspirations for the space. At Leithal Designs, we believe that a well-executed project starts with a structured briefing process—one that not only identifies functional requirements but also uncovers underlying objectives that the client may not have initially considered.
Through this collaborative approach, we worked closely with Riva to refine the vision, exploring ideas for finishes, aesthetics, and spatial functionality. Our design strategy focused on creating a balanced environment that caters to different working styles and user needs. This included designated quiet areas for focused work, collaborative zones to foster teamwork, meeting rooms for structured discussions, and networking spaces to encourage professional connections. We also considered adaptable areas that could host events, ensuring the space remains dynamic and versatile.
By integrating these elements, we designed a co-working environment that not only aligns with Riva’s brand identity but also enhances the experience for their customers, providing a seamless blend of functionality, comfort, and aesthetic appeal.
How did you approach the selection of the colour palette and textures?
The selection of the colour palette and textures was driven by a desire to create a sophisticated yet inviting environment that harmonises productivity with comfort. Our approach was to curate a palette that embodies the brand’s identity while maintaining a timeless and versatile aesthetic suited to a diverse range of professionals.
A neutral foundation was established using soft and dark greys, muted earthy tones, and warm, rich timbers. These finishes were carefully chosen to evoke a sense of calm and refinement while ensuring durability to withstand the demands of a dynamic co-working environment. Thoughtfully positioned throughout the space, these hues contribute to a cohesive and balanced atmosphere.
To enhance texture and depth, we incorporated a considered blend of natural and refined materials. Timber elements infuse warmth and an organic quality, while metal accents introduce an industrial edge that aligns with a modern, urban aesthetic. Plush fabrics in seating areas provide softness and comfort, while textured wall finishes and statement features add visual interest and character.
Every material and finish was selected not only for its aesthetic appeal but also for its durability and sustainability, ensuring longevity and practicality. The result is a co-working environment that is professional, inspiring, and adaptable to the evolving needs of its users.
Were there any challenges in designing the space, and how did you overcome them?
One of the key challenges in designing the space was achieving a seamless balance between flexibility, functionality, and aesthetic appeal while catering to a diverse range of users. Co-working environments must accommodate various working styles, some individuals require quiet, focused areas, while others thrive in collaborative and social settings and some members need a mix of both, depending on their tasks. Striking this balance without compromising spatial flow and comfort was a primary objective.
To address this, we developed a zoning strategy that clearly defines different areas while maintaining a cohesive design language. Acoustic treatments were essential to ensuring privacy within offices, preventing sound transfer between lessees while preserving an open and inviting atmosphere in collaborative, entertainment, or welcome areas. Strategic furniture placement and thoughtful material selections further enhanced acoustic performance, ensuring that quiet workspaces remain undisturbed while collaborative zones remain dynamic and engaging. Our goal was to create an environment that allows individuals the flexibility to engage in social interactions or retreat into focused work areas without disruption providing choice and control over their work setting.
Another challenge was optimising natural light throughout the space, particularly in areas where direct sunlight was limited. We implemented a layered lighting approach, integrating soft ambient lighting, such as LED strip lights and feature pendants to create a well-balanced, inviting atmosphere. We also incorporated full height glazed partitions to enhance natural light transference, allowing it to reach centrally located areas like corridors and internal offices, contributing to a brighter environment and supporting occupant well-being.
Designing adaptable spaces for events and networking posed another unique challenge. We addressed this by incorporating modular furniture and operable walls, allowing spaces to transition seamlessly from daily co-working functions to larger gatherings and workshops.
By addressing these challenges through strategic planning and creative problem-solving, we delivered a co-working space that is both highly functional and aesthetically refined, ensuring a seamless and adaptable experience for Riva and its members.
What are some of the standout design elements or key features?
Some of the standout design elements in Riva Offices Robina include the thoughtfully designed welcome areas, which feature a mix of open collaborative spaces and more refined, semi-private zones. To enhance comfort and functionality, we incorporated banquette seating, arched ceilings, and feature finishes and lighting, creating a visually striking yet inviting atmosphere.
Another key highlight is the large kitchenette, complemented by smaller tea points, collaborative areas, and a variety of individual and group meeting spaces. These range from private seating areas to open-plan collaborative zones, accommodating meetings of different sizes and styles. Designed for both everyday convenience and social engagement, these spaces support networking events and foster a seamless transition between work and leisure. This integration enhances member well-being while encouraging interaction, connection, and a strong sense of community.
How did you approach designing a space that balances aesthetics & functionality?
Our approach to designing a space that balances aesthetics and functionality began with collaboration, working closely with the entire team to gain a deep understanding of the project’s needs and objectives. Engaging with all stakeholders allowed us to identify key elements that needed to be integrated while exploring the best solutions to seamlessly incorporate them into the design.
From there, we focused on creating a space that is both highly functional and visually aspiring. Thoughtful spatial planning ensured an intuitive flow, with distinct zones for focused work, collaboration, and relaxation. A carefully curated palette and lighting enhanced both the practicality and atmosphere of the space. We delivered a workspace that not only meets operational needs but also inspires productivity, connection, and creativity.
